Overlook and Slot canyons

The next day of our trip we headed out to the literal middle of no where. On the 30 miles of dirt road we traveled in a mini-van (yes, kinda sketchy at times on this sometimes washed out and muddy dirt road) we saw only a handful of vehicles. We thought we'd be some of the only folks headed out this way. Nope. We get to the trailhead and couldn't even find a real place to park. It was nuts how many cars were actually there. But, it was UEA and a gorgeous weekend, and everyone took advantage of it.

We hiked down to where the slot canyons start and decided to go up Spooky Gulch and then come down Peek-a-boo.

Here is some of Spooky:

This was insanely narrow. I'd never done anything like this, ever, and it was so rad. It really was. Once again, Remy was in hiking heaven.

Pregnant or overweight, there was no way you were getting through some of the tight spots. This was made known as we waited in a wider spot for a group to pass by coming the opposite way. We watched a scout leader heave his body between the tight rock walls three times before he actually got through. Another man walked by with his shirt pocket torn and all the buttons down the front missing revealing a chaffed and scratched belly and chest. They seemed a bit desperate to get out into the open again.

Every once in a while we'd have to form a 'Remy chain' and pass Remy along and up places I was unable to carry her. She kinda hated that part, but it was the only thing we could do.

As we got up on top of the plateau, we noticed a rain cloud. Not exactly a good thing when the only way back is through another slot canyon. We picked up our pace and hurried to Peek-a-boo.

At the end of Peek-a-boo there is a big drop. We were so glad to have strong teenage boys there to help everyone down and up spots where we had to use a rope.

These canyons were so amazing. I've never been in a slot canyon like that before and I loved it. We had such a great trip. I love my family!
